Ropes & Gray hires partner from K&E

Ropes & Gray advised on more than 150 deals worth $17.5bn in 2019, according to the Secondaries Investor Law Firm Survey 2020. 

Ropes & Gray has added a secondaries-focused lawyer to its European asset management team.

Chris Townsend works on GP-led deals, portfolio sales and spinouts, among other types of secondaries transaction, according to a statement. He also advises sponsors on the establishment and structuring of private funds.

“His expertise and experience on GP fundraisings and GP-led secondary processes across a wide-ranging mix of clients will be an invaluable addition to our investment funds team, both in Europe and more globally,” said Tom Alabaster, EMEA head of funds.

Townsend joins from Kirkland & Ellis where he was a partner. He has worked in the funds teams of Fried Frank and Weil, Gotshal & Manges, according to his LinkedIn profile.

Ropes & Gray has 30 lawyers in its EMEA asset management team, according to the statement. In October, it promoted secondaries lawyers Adam Dobson, Chune Loong Lum and Justin Kliger to the position of  partner.
