Last year saw the amount of capital raised for secondaries hit $36.9 billion across 32 vehicles, down on the totals for 2017 and 2018, according to Secondaries Investor data.

The 10 largest funds in market were targeting $72.5 billion and had raised $36.6 billion through interim closes as of 1 January, suggesting a strong year ahead for capital raising.

The average fund size has increased since 2018 to $1.15 billion, the second year it has exceeded $1 billion. Last year’s figure is more than double the 2014 average of $550 million.

The five largest funds closed in 2019 raked in almost two-thirds of all capital raised by secondaries vehicles that held a final close. Leading this charge was Blackstone’s Strategic Partners, which raised $11.1 billion for its eighth secondaries programme in July.
